City of Muse: a relaxing-yet-eery experience

City of Muse is a game that places you in a deserted cliffside city, where you can explore and try to learn what happened to the inhabitants.

A mysterious adventure game

This game is a pay what you want walking simulator with a mysterious narrative about an abandoned city. The city is abandoned due to some unknown event, which the player can learn about by talking to the few remaining inhabitants. Despite the eerie nature of the game, the atmosphere is relaxing, with an ambient soundtrack to match the calm visuals.

A gentle experience with a dark undertone

Despite the calm nature of the game, there is a dark undertone to the story of where the city’s inhabitants of gone. The game is closer to Explore Fushimi Inari than it is to a horror walking simulator like Contempt, but users should be aware there is a mild horror element to it as well.

No skill necessary

Being a walking simulator, there is no skill required to play City of Muse; the user simply has to move around the city and explore at their leisure. As you pass near the few dwellers still in the city, they will give you cryptic messages that hint at what has happened to the city and its people.

A short, one-off experience

The game is available on a pay what you want model and features about five or ten minutes of playtime—though you can carry on exploring the city as long as you like. There is not much replayability to the game, however. The city is quite small, and once you have seen it all, there isn’t much reason to come back to it. However, the story is interesting, and the aesthetic is very pleasing.

PROS

  • Relaxing visuals and soundtrack
  • Cohesive in-game environment
  • Intriguing story
  • No skill required to play the game
